Only 90 km south of Quito along the Avenue of the Volcanoes lies Latacunga, capital city of the Cotopaxi Province. Its name comes from the Quechua words meaning "land of my choice". The towering (6000 meters) and still active Cotopaxi volcano erupted and destroyed the city three times, yet the city was persistently rebuilt. It was the main center for the Puruhá Indians who lived there before the Incas. And although there is little evidence of its long and interesting history, its big open market, where indigenous and mestizo people market their agricultural products, continues to be a special attraction. Colorful fruit, vegetables and grains offer a “not to be missed” photographic opportunity. Enjoy lunch at a typical hacienda before returning to Quito.
